Romania

Romania is the first country in the European Union in terms of abandonment cases: there are about 57 thousand abandoned children, 20 thousand live in orphanages, and another 37 thousand are entrusted to families. Between July 2016 and June 2017 alone, more than 10,000 children were abandoned, according to statistics from the National Authority responsible for their protection and adoption process. A recent study by Unicef, the World Bank and local authorities identified four main causes of abandonment and removal of children from their families of origin: poverty (36%), disability, abuse and neglect.
