Medical-health care
Most of the children in the Centre were born to a seropositive mother. Many of them were abandoned shortly after birth in the maternity ward. Until the child reaches 18-24 months of age, it will not be possible to establish with certainty whether he has been infected by the mother. Until then the child:
– will be constantly monitored by specialized medical staff, from the university hospital of infectious diseases in the capital, through periodic (blood) tests and visits (cardiologists, dermatologists, orthopaedists, etc.);
– will take antiretroviral therapy, chosen from among the most recent possible ones
Subsequently, only in case of a negative diagnosis, medical checks will continue annually, rather than quarterly. In the Pilot Centre there is also a nurse, who ensures, in case of need, immediate intervention 24 hours a day.
